A minted vicar’s thaler.
An impressive, wide coin with a natural luster shining through the patina. It features a very nice relief.
A large vicarage coin of Augustus II, which was the first vicarage coin of a Polish king. The name derives from a privilege granted to the Saxon electors, who, under its terms, exercised vicarious authority in the Saxon district following the emperor’s death. Coins of various denominations were struck to mark this occasion, most featuring a beautifully executed depiction of the king reining in a horse.
The thaler is the largest coin in this series. And although it appears regularly at auctions, acquiring it in mint condition is quite a challenge. In our company’s 25-year history, we have had this coin in such condition only once, with an MS grade (Auction 28, Lot 300, sold for 32,400 PLN).
