Roman Banaszewski was born in 1932 and died in 2021. He studied painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He earned his degree at the Department of Graphic Arts in Prof. Konrad Srzednicki’s lithography studio and in Maciej Makarewicz’s poster studio. In 1961, he began his teaching career as an assistant at the Faculty of the Kraków University of Technology. From 1969, he worked at the Faculty of Industrial Design at the Academy of Fine Arts. The artist was awarded the title of professor in 1987. He headed the Studio of Graphic Design, Book Design, and Typography at his alma mater. After retiring in 2002, he worked at the European Academy of Arts and at the Polish-Japanese College of Computer Technology in Warsaw.
He participated in numerous plein air workshops and symposia both in Poland and abroad (in France, Italy, Greece, Argentina, and Mexico). These workshops resulted in numerous exhibitions.
He was honored with the “Golden Laurel” for mastery in the arts, the Knight’s Cross, the Honoris Gratia Medal, and the bronze “Gloria Artis” Medal for Merit to Culture.
The artist’s works are included in the collections of the National Museums in Warsaw and Kraków, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the National Museum in Poznań, the National Museum in Tokyo, the Oslo Art Gallery, the Pratt Institute in New York, the Cabinet of Prints in Geneva, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the New Darmstadt Secession in Darmstadt, and many others.
