Biography
She began her artistic education at the École normale supérieure de jeunes filles in Sèvres, where she learned to decorate porcelain. In 1905, she returned to her native Paris, where she studied at the Académie Humbert, focusing on painting and decorative arts. Marie Laurencin was the muse and great love of the avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Her romantic relationship with this renowned artist earned her a place in the French artistic bohemian scene in Montmartre, and later in Montparnasse. She painted portraits of Pablo Picasso, Coco Chanel, and Helena Rubinstein, and her paintings were purchased by Gertrude Stein herself. In addition to numerous portraits of Parisian celebrities, the artist’s work was dominated by lyrical, pastel-hued portraits of women, oscillating between ballet and decorative art
