Jerzy Panek (Tarnów 1918 - Kraków 2001) studied graphic arts at the State Institute of Fine Arts in Kraków (1937-1939). He continued them at the Kunstgewerbeschule (1940-1942) and then at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (1945-1948, diploma 1955). In 1955 he traveled to China. For a year he taught drawing and painting at the Faculty of Industrial Forms of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (1967-1968). Since the early 1950s, he focused on the woodcut technique, which he treated unconventionally, namely as an opportunity to work on the borderline of sculpture. Pank's woodcut blocks were characterized not only by their large size, but also by the fact that their "printing surfaces" were reduced to synthetic, sparing outlines of shapes on broad areas of white. The subject matter of his woodcuts revolved around folk, rural and small-town affairs and climates. The artist was particularly fond of portraying animals. As a printmaker, he gained an international reputation and many awards. In the 1970s, he took up painting more extensively, creating a series of "Self-Portraits," characterized by rubbishy self-irony.
