Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz was among the esteemed realist painters of the late 19th century, particularly recognized as a master of portraiture and historical and battle scenes. His artistic activity was strongly connected with his numerous travels - especially to the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire - which significantly influenced the development of his interest in oriental aesthetics.
Contact with a different culture, light and landscape resulted in the inclusion in his work of motifs characteristic of Orientalism - a popular artistic trend in the 19th century, showing the exoticism of the East in a way that was often idealized and characterized by romanticism. Ajdukiewicz, while remaining faithful to the realistic technique, was able to convey the atmosphere and color of these distant places.
