Together with Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Nicola De Maria and Sandro Chia, the Campania-born artist Mimmo Paladino is one of the representatives of Transavanguardia, an Italian art movement initiated in the second half of the 1970s by Achille Bonito Oliva with the aim of overcoming the abstract-conceptual language of the neo-avant-garde through a return to tradition and to a figuration with expressionist traits that favors painting, color and technique and brings these characteristics back to the present. In Mimmo Paladino's artistic research, the works of art evoke a mysterious and primitive universe in which forms are translated into elegant and simplified signs. His works refer to a wide range of archaeological, mythological and stylistic sources, including Egyptian, Etruscan, Greco-Roman, early Christian and Romanesque art.
