patinated bronze, 39 cm with base, signed 'Mitoraj', next to foundry punch: 'FONDERIA TESCONI PIETRASANTA', edition: 50/250
One of the most outstanding sculptors of contemporary art. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, including under Tadeusz Kantor, from 1967 to 1968. In 1968 he left Poland for Paris, where he continued his studies at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He abandoned painting in favor of sculpture. He worked mainly in stone and bronze. The main theme of his sculptural works is the human body. In his work, the artist referred to the canons of ancient art, using figures of mythological heroes. In academic forms, Mitoraj showed idealized fragments of male torsos and faces, often adding bandage motifs. The artist's work is a kind of dialogue between antiquity and modernity. His monumental compositions can be found in major cities in Europe and the United States.
