A unique Catholic printing from Anglican Britain. AuthorHenry Turberville (ca. 1607-1678), born in Staffordshire, was a Catholic clergyman known for his two treatises "Abridgement of Christian Doctrine", known as the so-called "Doway catechism". His second treatise, which is an analysis of the controversies surrounding Catholic doctrine, from the point of view of Protestants (sacraments, transubstantiation, veneration of saints and relics, etc.), is on sale. It was first published in 1654 in Douai, France (Doway English). This town in northern France in the 16th and 17th centuries, became an important center for the training of English Catholic priests during the persecution of Catholics in England. Presented old-print, this is the fifth edition supplemented with a poem on the real presence and role of faith in human life appended to the edition by the Author's J.D. [sic!] friend, Henry Turberville. Text in English. Missing from the BNF! In the National Library of Australia only reproductions and a later edition from 1806, which is the only one available on the antiquarian market, priced at $250. Very rare!
