Lviv, 1908. Published by "Galeria Miejska." 23x30.5 cm, 94 pages, black-and-white illustrations in the text, 2 plates with reproductions, softcover. In good condition (spine reinforced with paper, cover soiled, rust-colored stains on the tissue paper preceding the plates).
A publication concerning the emerging Municipal Gallery in Lviv and the high-profile controversy surrounding the value and attribution of works of art purchased by the city. It includes an opinion by the Viennese art historian Theodor von Frimmel, who spoke highly of the collection being assembled, as well as materials relating to Polish and foreign criticism of the gallery. A painting attributed to Raphael, whose authenticity was questioned by Lviv art historians, stirred particular controversy. The publication was translated into Polish and provided with an introduction by Tadeusz Rutowski, vice president of Lviv and one of the gallery’s principal organizers.
