CÉLINELouis-Ferdinand
JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE NIGHT
Warsaw 1933, J. Przeworski Publishing House, 660 pages, 13x18.5 cm
Céline’s debut novel, based in part on autobiographical experiences, is one of the most important works of 20th-century literature. The narrative follows the life of Ferdinand Bardamu—from his experiences on the front lines of World War I, through a colonial stint in Africa and work in American industry, to his medical practice in the poor neighborhoods on the outskirts of Paris.
The work stands out for its radical break with traditional novelistic style—the author incorporates spoken language, elements of slang, and colloquialisms, creating an expressive, brutal portrait of contemporary life. The critical, often pessimistic tone of the narrative and the work’s anti-war message became one of the reasons for its widespread impact.
