MICKIEWICZ Adam - KONRAD WALLENROD GRAZYNA Poems by Adam Mickiewicz. Pieriewod by V. Benediktov. S risunkami J. Tysiewicza.
S. St. Petersburg 1863, Izdaniye Knigoprodawca i Tipografa M.O. Wolf, pp. 191, portrait 1 (woodcut), engraved plates 18 (woodcuts), numerous illustrations in the text (woodcuts), 23 cm, co. leather binding with title on front and spine.
St. Petersburg edition of "Konrad Wallenrod" and "Grazyna" by Adam Mickiewicz, richly illustrated, with woodcuts based on drawings by Jan Tysiewicz (Wladyslaw Niewiarowicz, 1815-1891), a Polish painter working in exile in Paris after the November Uprising. The edition impresses with the enormity of the illustrations, which perfectly emphasize the romantic atmosphere of the works. A great decoration of the book are the initials, drawn against the background of small details of architecture or views of localities. Equally beautiful are vignettes with panoplies, and finally small views of Lithuanian and Prussian cities, edifices, ruins and castle interiors (A. Semkowicz's opinion of the edition with a different translation).
Outdated library stamps, numerous soiling, staining and flooding of the paper, underlining in pencil in places. Overall condition good. Rare.
