(PLANIGLOBY). Mappemonde, or Description of the Terrestrial Globe.
Compiled from the most recent records and based on astronomical observations, by Robert de Vaugondy Jr., Paris 1752. Copperplate engraving, a world map in two hemispheres, surface-colored, with decorative cartouches. Scale approx. 1 : 70,000,000. Sheet dimensions: 50.5 × 76.5 cm. Drawn by Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger, engraved by P. F. Tardieu.
The map reflects the state of geographical knowledge in the mid-18th century. Areas that were still poorly mapped are depicted in a particularly interesting manner, including the northwestern part of North America and Australia, whose outline remains partly hypothetical. The routes of important maritime expeditions are also marked, including those of George Anson, as well as the shipping routes of Spanish galleons between Manila and Acapulco. The map belongs to the first edition of this decorative composition and is distinguished by an impressive, figurative cartouche designed by Cochin and engraved by Tardieu. Traces of slight soiling. Very good condition. Rare.
