Biography
One of the leading artists of the second half of the 20th century, a prominent activist in the feminist movement, and a pioneer of the neo-avant-garde and conceptual art in Poland. From 1957 to 1963, she studied at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław. Even during her studies, she was interested in working in various media, ranging from photography and printmaking to painting. In the 1970s, her interests also expanded to include experimental film, installation, sculpture, video art, and performance. Starting in 1970, together with Andrzej Lachowicz and Zbigniew Dłubak, she co-founded the Permafo group and gallery (operating since 1981). Her iconic works from the 1970s, such as “Consumer Art” and “Post-Consumer Art,” earned her international recognition. Her work exhibits many characteristics rooted in the traditions of conceptual art and body art. Her works often explore existential and metaphysical themes that span the gap between an individual’s personal experiences and the universal dimension. For years, Natalia LL’s work has consistently compelled viewers to question the nature of art and the foundations of human existence.
