Signed p. d.: ARTHUR SZYK PARIS S.K.
The work on display refers to one of the most important illuminating series in the oeuvre of Artur Szyk, an artist who combined the tradition of medieval miniature art with the modern sensibility of an illustrator and commentator on history. The composition "Jewish Notables before King Casimir the Great" is part of the monumental artistic and editorial undertaking "Statute of Kalisz," in which Szyk referred to one of the key documents in the history of Polish Jews.
This illuminated edition of the privilege for Jews was created by Artur Szyk in 1926-1928, was called by him "The Golden Book of Polish Jewry," dedicated to Jozef Pilsudski, and published in 1932 by the F. Brückmann S.A. printing house in Munich. It contains the text of the 1264 document in 9 languages, decorated with miniatures illustrating the history of the Jews in Poland. It contains 45 pages stylized as medieval illuminated manuscripts. The miniatures refer to articles of the Statute (issued by Boleslaw the Pious) and show the history of the Jews in Poland, highlighting their contribution to the development of the country.
One of the few complete pieces (number 176) was given by Artur Szyk to Ignacy Jan Paderewski.
The original cards and reprints are the subject of prestigious exhibitions, including those at the Kordegarda Gallery and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Some of the original cards are in the collection of the Municipal Public Library in Kalisz.
In the work on display, Szyk's style is immediately recognizable: precise outline, saturated, jewel-like colors, ornamental borders and decorative initials are reminiscent of late Gothic and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts. The artist worked with the gouache technique, allowing for intense, opaque color patches and clear, golden accents. The surface of the painting is meticulously detailed - every detail of the costume, architecture or insignia of power was treated with miniature care. Also characteristic are the elaborate ornamental frames, which do not serve a purely decorative function, but build an autonomous symbolic space, integrating the historical scene with heraldry and floral motifs.
The scene depicts the offering of a Torah scroll to King Casimir the Great. This ruler went down in historical tradition as the protector of the Jewish community in the Kingdom of Poland. The event refers to the so-called Statute of Kalisz, a legal act issued in 1264 by Boleslaw the Pious and later confirmed and expanded by Casimir the Great in the 14th century. The document guaranteed legal protection for Jews, freedom of trade and judicial autonomy, becoming the foundation for the centuries-long presence and development of Jewish culture in Polish lands.
In Szyk's iconography, the event takes on an almost ceremonial dimension - the monarch is shown frontally, in majesty, while the Jewish delegation appears as a community of learned and dignified people, representing the order of law and tradition.
The Statute of Kalisz functions in Szyk's work not only as a historical subject, but also as a unique artistic publication. The artist developed a series of illuminations for a luxurious bibliophilic edition of the text, in which the medieval document was treated like a royal manuscript. The book, prepared to highlight Poland's centuries-old tradition of tolerance, was at the same time a cultural and political manifesto - especially in the context of growing tensions and anti-Semitism in Europe in the 20th century. Szyk, working at the intersection of art and ideas, treated illustration as a tool for historical narration and building a bridge between the past and the present.
The presented miniature is an excellent example of the artist's mature style: it synthesizes historical subject matter with decorativeness, combines compositional rigor with narrative detail, and medieval convention with a modern, conscious creative gesture. This work is not only an elaborate illumination, but also a visual commentary on the ideas of law, tolerance and dialogue - values that have held a special place in Arthur Szyk's work.
