Marek Sobczyk studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1975-1980. His diploma, made under the direction of Professor Stefan Gierowski, was partially censored by the university authorities. In his early years, the artist painted decorative, synthetic abstract compositions. In 1983 he joined Gruppa, with which he exhibited until the end of its activities in 1992. He willingly painted together with his colleagues: with Ryszard Wozniak in 1983 and with Jaroslaw Modzelewski in 1984 (he resumed his cooperation with Modzelewski in the 1990s, which resulted in a series of joint paintings, exhibited in 1998). In the mid-1980s, he painted elaborate figural compositions, alluding to sacred or historical content or mixing various themes as if in a dream or hallucination. During this period, in the full-bodied manner of painting, intense colors, rich textures, he came closest to the stylistic features of the new expression, dominant in the painting of the young 1980s.
