Leopold I (1657-1705) became King of Hungary and Emperor as a result of the early death of his older brother, Ferdinand IV, long groomed as successor. He supported Poland in the final phase of the war with Sweden, and in return received the support of John III in the war with Turkey. He eventually drove the Turks out of Hungary. Among other things, he founded the University of Wrocław.
