Rare issue for Transylvania.
The ducat struck in Alba Iulia (Karlsburg, today in Romania) recalls the importance of Transylvania as a strategic part of the Habsburg monarchy. The region was permanently incorporated into the Habsburg Empire after the wars with the Ottoman Turks.
The gold ducats of Ioseph II are highly esteemed issues, and pieces struck in Transylvania are particularly sought after on the collectors’ market due to their limited mintage and historical significance.
The offered specimen is highly attractive, with only minimal traces of circulation visible on the highest points. The fields remain fresh and lustrous, with a significant amount of original mint freshness throughout.
