Bronze, patinated casting; height 106.5 cm.
Belgium, Brussels, Usine des Bronzes - Robert DE BRAZ (foundry), late 19th century.
Pair of naked wrestlers in dynamic struggle. On the irregular base on the side the signature: "Jef LAMBEAUX" and the oval feature of the foundry with the inscription: "USINE DES BRONZES / BRUXELLES / ROBERT
DE BRAZ."
The extremely talented Belgian artist received a medal for his debut at an exhibition in Brussels as early as 1881. He gained fame when he received a medal of honor at the Paris International Exhibition in 1900 - for his monumental bas-relief "Human Passions"; the work, consisting of 17 blocks of Carrara marble, is currently on display in the pavilion "Les Passions Humaines" specially built by architect Victor Horta in the Fifty Years Park in Brussels.
Lambeaux had a passion for wrestling and boxing fights since childhood, and was a fan of athletes' agility shows in the circus. Hence, probably, the presence of this subject matter in his work; a number of his sculptures entitled: "Les Lutteurs," illustrating the wrestling of young, athletically built men. One such work is the sculpture on display, from the foundry of Robert de Braz, which is another, later variant of "The Wrestlers" from 1895, from the foundry workshop of "Les Ateliers Van Aerschodt."
