Bois Durci was one of the early composite materials. Patented in 1855, the material consisted of finely ground sawdust and protein (from blood or eggs). Once the ingredients were mixed, they were heated and pressed together to produce a hard, smooth surface. Small decorative objects, luxury desk sets and medallions, such as the piece on offer, were produced from this material. Beginning around 1907/1908, protein began to be replaced by natural and artificial resins. By the late 1920s, more modern materials had completely supplanted Bois Durci.
