Etching, color aquatint, paper; dimensions: 430 x 100 mm (composition); signed: l.d.: TORPEDO, s.d.:69/100 p.d.:Sroka 2007.
Iconographically, the work employs Sroka's characteristic abbreviation and irony: the representation of the figure (shot from behind, on a moped/bike-like vehicle) is both literal and grotesque. The narrow frame enhances the effect of a "bullet" or "fly-by," and at the same time turns a genre scene into a sign. An ordinary motif is transformed into an image with a double meaning: comic and somewhat disturbing.
In this sense, Torpedo fits well into the artist's broader language. Culture.pl points out that Sroka combines the grotesque, pastiche and black humor, and that his art grows out of the Krakow school of graphic design and a propensity for metaphorical, perverse commentary on reality. The source also recalls his artistic path: studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (graphic design under Mieczyslaw Wejman, drawing under Adam Hoffman, painting under Jan Świderski).
