E. 34, 48. Slight staining of the corner of the first pages, small trace of moisture on the edges of some pages, good condition. Two-color printing in black and red. Numerous marginalia of the period. One of the earliest printings by Florian Ungler, a Cracow printer. Title page in woodcut; silhouettes of St. Adalbert and St. Stanislaus in bishop's attire, above a crown and two shields of arms supported by angels: White Eagle and Pogo. Between the figures of the saints the Ciołek coat of arms (of Erazm Ciołek, Bishop of Plock, and Maciej Drzewicki, Bishop of Przemysl), above the lower margin a griffin on the shield of the coat of arms - Ungler's signet. On the back a full-page woodcut composition depicting the Last Supper in an elaborate floral border with the coat of arms of the Kingdom and the coat of arms of Cracow. Decorative initials in the text.
The author of the missal presented here is J. Burchardus (1450-1506), Vatican master of ceremonies. The work was first published in Rome in 1498. The basis of the Kraków edition was the third edition of 1508, substantially supplemented by Stanislaw Zaborowski (ca 1470-1530), a lawyer and grammarian. An unsigned preface specifies the purpose of publishing the work: "It arises here on those priests who do not understand the meaning of liturgical actions [...]; it compares them to unintelligent animals, especially to monkeys, who mindlessly imitate human movements. Hence the need for this work, which contains an interpretation of the rites of the Mass." (Estreicher). About Ungler, F. Kopera wrote: "Having made his own printing house, he brought in beautiful Latin fonts, the printing was bright and clean, the paper was excellent, the correction was diligent and careful. Soon his establishment was also the first in Cracow and all of Poland" (F. Kopera "Spis druków epoki jagiellońskiej", Kr. 1900, szp. 45).
