Defense of Lviv, Battle for Lviv November 1 to 22, 1918 - the capture of the barracks on Kurkowa Street by Ukrainian troops numbering about 1,700 soldiers of the former Austro-Hungarian army commanded by Dmitry Vitovsky at 3:30 a.m. on November 1, 1918 began the three-week struggle for the main city of Eastern Lesser Poland, the second largest city of the Second Polish Republic - Lviv. The Polish armed forces surprised, initially numbering about 700 men with Capt. Czeslaw Mączynski in the lead, could not put up enough resistance which the Ukrainians took advantage of and captured the most important, strategic points of Lviv in just a few hours, however, the Polish civilian population, especially school children willingly joining the fighters against the Ukrainians prolongs the Polish resistance, which has a heroic, decisive role in the further fighting. Poles and their involvement especially in the western part of Lviv and the buildings there became Polish redoubts. After a brief truce during which the Ukrainians received support in the number of more than 2,000 Sich Sharpshooters, the fighting flared up with renewed vigor. However, Polish resistance was fierce, Ukrainian assaults did not bring them success. Fighting with varying results continued in the middle of the city for the next few days without giving anyone a significant advantage. Only the strike of Col. Michal Karaszewocz-Tokarzewski in a force of 1300 men with 3 armored trains led to the liberation of Lviv.

Good condition: period bookbinding slightly rubbed and soiled.
