WASSERMANN JAKÓB (1873- 1934) - German writer of Jewish descent, popular in the interwar period. A staunch opponent of Nazism. A connoisseur of the European novel tradition. With his work, he joined his contemporaries in the discussion of the self-consciousness of German Jews. He undertook moralistic criticism of society and its institutions in his novels: The Child of Europe, or Kacper Hauser, The Maurizius Affair, Twilight of the Angels, and Joseph Kerkhoven's The Third Existence. In 1926 he was elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, but resigned in 1933, having preempted his removal from the Academy by the Nazis. In the same year, he was on the list of authors banned in Germany due to his Jewish origin
