LENGNICH Gotfrid - Historia Polona a Lecho ad Avgvsti II mortem. Lipsiae 1740. impensis Iacobi Schvster. 8, s. [16], 368, [39]. Period perg. binding, stained trim.
E.21, 170. minor discoloration of parchment, good condition. History of Poland from Lech to the reign of Augustus the Strong, by G. Lengnich, a Danzig lawyer and historian. On the title page, a copperplate engraving depicting the White Eagle with outspread wings, with his paw resting on the royal apple; above, the royal crown and arms. The work is dedicated to Stanislaw Poniatowski, voivode of Mazovia, father of the later king (on the dedication page there is a decorative copperplate vignette with the Ciołek coat of arms). "The author's criticism, his independence of judgment [...], as well as his didactic values determine the importance of the work. Instead, interesting light is shed on the political sympathies and attitude of the historian by his descriptions of the reign of August II, in which he diplomatically passes over inconvenient facts, creating an idealized picture of the whole" (PSB).
