Willem de Pooter (1608-1668 Haarlem) - atribbuted, The Baptism of Eunuch Ethiop
This rare iconography shows the baptism of a chamberlain to the queen of Ethiopia by the apostle Philip, as recounted in Acts 8: 26-40. According to the story, the chamberlain had been to Jerusalem to pray. When Philip heard him reading Isaiah, he asked him if he understood it. The dignitary sighed and conceded that he had never been taught, so Philip sat next to him in his chariot and began to teach him. After Philip spoke, the chamberlain was so convinced of Christ's messianic nature that he stopped at a spring to be baptized by Philip. Oil on wood panel, 31 x 34 cm
