Caspar Netscher (1636 – 1684) – Atribbuted, Portrait of a Gentleman and a Lady
PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN AND A LADY
The elegant figures, the refined technique and the quality of this work conform to the style of Caspar Netscher, the most popular painter in The Hague. Particularly notable are the settings and backgrounds that he used in his portraits, which involve sumptuous curtains and hangings; or which, as here, take the form of landscapes. The gestures, the richness of the clothes, and the woman’s jewels suggest that these individuals belonged to the wealthy, fashionably dressed classes, indicated by the man’s long wig and the French details of his dress. Oil on canvas, 50,5 x 42,5 cm
