Hermann Wehrmann was born in Hamburg on July 18, 1897. From 1912 to 1913, he attended the State School of Applied Arts in Hamburg, where he became a lithographer. After World War I, he returned to the Hamburg School of Applied Arts in the winter semester of 1919/20, where he studied under Arthur Illies. He then moved to the School of Fine Arts in Kassel. In the 1920s he worked as a restorer for August Wilckens, and later continued restoring churches on his own. He also undertook commissioned work on public buildings. After World War II, he participated in more than 50 church renovations in 16 years. In 1946, he became a member of the newly founded Steinburg Artists Association. In 1951, he joined the Artists' Association in Hamburg. A fire in 1971 destroyed much of his work, including oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints. Hermann Wehrmann died in Glückstadt on October 5, 1977.
