Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and Katowice. He received his diploma in 1962. Painter, essayist, expert and promoter of Buddhism, animator of independent culture, became an icon of the Polish artistic underground. In early 1960, together with Urszula Broll, he established a studio in Katowice, which was a significant cultural venue in the 1960s and 1970s. It dealt with the arcane sciences, occultism, alchemy, astrology and art, among other things. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was involved in the animation of independent artistic life and underground publishing activities related to cultural issues and Buddhism. Urbanovich's work is multifaceted and his artistic activities were not limited to one medium. He is known primarily as a painter who used symbols to convey important encrypted messages to the viewer. He also created objects, carried out paratheatrical activities, and often reached for mixed techniques or printmaking.
