Polish Use of German Third Reich Helmets.
During the German occupation, soldiers in the forest units of the Polish Underground State used whatever helmets were available, including wz. 31 helmets left over from the September Campaign, as well as a wide variety of German helmets captured from enemy soldiers during combat operations. These trophies were modified in various ways, undergoing a range of treatments aimed at “Polonizing” them. To this end, Polish military eagles were affixed to the German helmets, and Polish insignia and national colors were painted on them. The “Polonized” German helmets became one of the symbols of the heroic struggles of the Warsaw Insurgents. Starting in 1944, as the Red Army and AWP units occupied more and more Polish territory, a Soviet-controlled reconstruction of Polish state structures took place. In the newly liberated areas, the structures of the Citizens’ Militia (MO) were established, armed units of the Railway Security Service (SOK) and industrial security guards were formed, and Fire Department units were re-uniformed. Starting in 1944, all these units used German helmets that had been modified in various ways; these were gradually replaced with Polish ones in the postwar period. These “Polonized” German helmets are today a fascinating historical testament to the partisan and insurgent battles of the war, the restoration of Polish institutions under Soviet control that began in the final stages of the war, and the difficult period of postwar reconstruction. Many of them were repainted individually (or in small batches) during that era, making them very interesting and often completely unique collector’s items.
The piece offered here is a “Gladiator”-type helmet from World War II, intended for the German air defense (“Luftschutz”). This helmet has been “Polonized”: the original German factory paint was repainted gray, the Polish national colors were added to the side of the helmet, and a red cartouche featuring the Polish eagle was added to the front. A very striking piece. Dimensions: 16 x 30 x 26.5 cm. The item’s condition is shown in the attached photos.
