Wood
This rare and significant 16th-century sculpture depicts a member of the Franciscan Order, most likely the order's founder, Saint Francis of Assisi. The figure is characterized by a profound asceticism, with the facial features rendered to convey a sense of humility and spiritual sorrow, hallmarks of the saint's traditional iconography. He is shown wearing the classic Franciscan habit, including the cowl and the knotted cord (cingulum) at the waist. Carved wood with traces of historical polychrome, Height 71 cm.
